Gena or Lidet is Ethiopian Christmas. Following the Orthodox calendar, Ethiopians celebrate Christmas on January 7th instead of December 25th.  Gena was first known as Lidet (birthday) however, today most Ethiopians call Christmas Gena because of a traditional hockey-like game that young men play on Christmas day. The game became so popular that it is now synonymous with Christmas.
Ethiopian Kids Community Celebrates Gena in January each year. The 2012 Gena celebration was attended by over 250 people. We enjoyed an Ethiopian potluck meal, kid's activities, and meeting new friends!
